This was one of few sixty-minute broadcasts and was the most important dramatic show in radio. The 931 episodes broadcast were all based on popular films with the biggest stars of Hollywood playing the parts and during its heyday the audience was estimated as high as forty million.
The one-and-only Cecil B. DeMille was your host (1936-45) for a lavish production of what was to become a veritable film checklist of many of Hollywoods best films from the mid-30s right through the mid 50s. Every genre is included, from darkest noir crime dramas to historical epics to bubbly musicals and broad comedies. There are some titles that are less known today, and that makes them even more historical.
The stars of the movie are usually in the productions, although sometimes contracts or schedules meant that another star took the part. In some another star would be featured in one of the major roles. The productions were live, with full orchestra, and many Hollywood legends were unused to performing in public without the benefit of retakes. Needless to say, the performances in every show are singular.
The Lux Radio Theatre is a masterpiece in OTRs crown, and each show is a historical time capsule that takes us back to the glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood.\";s:8:\"explicit\";s:2:\"no\";s:8:\"keywords\";s:42:\"lux radio theatre,OTR,old time radio,botar\";}s:4:\"link\";s:82:\"http://media.libsyn.com/media/botar/OTR_lux_radio_theatre__old_maid_10_30_1939.mp3\";s:4:\"guid\";s:82:\"http://media.libsyn.com/media/botar/OTR_lux_radio_theatre__old_maid_10_30_1939.mp3\";s:11:\"description\";s:99:\"A melodrama of mother love and sacrifice through the years, stars Loretta Young and Miriam Hopkins.\";s:7:\"pubdate\";s:32:\"Thu, 23 Oct 2008 09:00:00 -0700 \";s:8:\"category\";s:14:\"Old Time Radio\";s:7:\"summary\";s:99:\"A melodrama of mother love and sacrifice through the years, stars Loretta Young and Miriam Hopkins.\";}i:20;a:8:{s:5:\"title\";s:49:\"journey into space, red planet mars p5 11/03/1954\";s:6:\"itunes\";a:5:{s:6:\"author\";s:12:\"www.botar.us\";s:8:\"subtitle\";s:28:\"original air date 11/03/1954\";s:7:\"summary\";s:356:\"Journey Into Space was a science fiction series broadcast on BBC radio in the 1950s. Unlike the small screen version, in this medium there was usually a tag scene back at the Carlton. Initially, the episodes were adaptations of the television program as broadcast earlier the same week, but eventually original stories were produced, including a finale in which Paladin left San Francisco apparently forever, to claim an inheritance back East.\";s:8:\"explicit\";s:2:\"no\";s:8:\"keywords\";s:53:\"have gun will travel, western,OTR,old time radio,botar\";}s:4:\"link\";s:90:\"http://media.libsyn.com/media/botar/OTR_have_gun_will_travel__blind_courage_05_31_1959.MP3\";s:4:\"guid\";s:90:\"http://media.libsyn.com/media/botar/OTR_have_gun_will_travel__blind_courage_05_31_1959.MP3\";s:11:\"description\";s:109:\"Paladin is hired by the fabulously wealthy Mr. Sutherland to teach him how to shoot, even though he is blind.\";s:7:\"pubdate\";s:32:\"Sat, 18 Oct 2008 09:00:00 -0700 \";s:8:\"category\";s:14:\"Old Time Radio\";s:7:\"summary\";s:109:\"Paladin is hired by the fabulously wealthy Mr. Sutherland to teach him how to shoot, even though he is blind.\";}i:27;a:8:{s:5:\"title\";s:54:\"crime classics, triangle on the round table 11/18/1953\";s:6:\"itunes\";a:5:{s:6:\"author\";s:12:\"www.botar.us\";s:8:\"subtitle\";s:28:\"original air date 11/18/1953\";s:7:\"summary\";s:284:\"Crime Classics 1953-1954.
The Lux Radio Theatre is a masterpiece in OTRs crown, and each show is a historical time capsule that takes us back to the glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood.\";s:8:\"explicit\";s:2:\"no\";s:8:\"keywords\";s:42:\"lux radio theatre,OTR,old time radio,botar\";}s:4:\"link\";s:93:\"http://media.libsyn.com/media/botar/OTR_lux_radio_theatre__voice_of_bugle_anne_07_06_1936.mp3\";s:4:\"guid\";s:93:\"http://media.libsyn.com/media/botar/OTR_lux_radio_theatre__voice_of_bugle_anne_07_06_1936.mp3\";s:11:\"description\";s:127:\"A melodrama about an old farmer who loves to hunt foxes, and his favorite hunting dog, stars Lionel Barrymore and Anne Shirley.\";s:7:\"pubdate\";s:32:\"Thu, 16 Oct 2008 09:00:00 -0700 \";s:8:\"category\";s:14:\"Old Time Radio\";s:7:\"summary\";s:127:\"A melodrama about an old farmer who loves to hunt foxes, and his favorite hunting dog, stars Lionel Barrymore and Anne Shirley.\";}i:29;a:8:{s:5:\"title\";s:49:\"journey into space, red planet mars p4 10/27/1954\";s:6:\"itunes\";a:5:{s:6:\"author\";s:12:\"www.botar.us\";s:8:\"subtitle\";s:28:\"original air date 10/27/1954\";s:7:\"summary\";s:356:\"Journey Into Space was a science fiction series broadcast on BBC radio in the 1950s.
