Have you ever had a Milligan Moment?
For me, Spike was a marvel of the hilarious nonsensical, delighting in creating crazy word pictures conjured up with the assistance of the double meanings of words, a thing that most small children love …
In the midst of an hilarious moment, have you ever thought “Spike would have loved that! Ever think of Spike at odd moments? Have read below and add your own Milligan Moment or tribute in the comments.

Actor and comic Spike Milligan has died at his home in Sussex aged 83 years old.

With his sharp wit, he was regarded as one of Britain’s most respected performers, known to millions as one of the founding members of The Goons.

Together with Peter Sellers, Michael Bentine and Harry Secombe, the quartet helped redefine comedy programmes for a generation.

He was also a respected comic author.

Send us your tributes for Spike Milligan. What are your favourite comic memories?

Your reaction:
Like so many of his generation my father (an ex- guardsman) would never talk to us, his children, about his wartime experiences. One day he saw me reading ‘Adolf Hitler my Part in His Downfall’. Dad picked it up and read it at a sitting. He shed tears of laughter. Later he read ‘Rommel’ and shed tears of a different kind. All dad would say was ‘that¿s exactly what it was like, son’. Spike was not only a comic genius & great man of letters, he was also honest. I always felt that the only thing that he respected was the truth. Thanks, Spike.

He just ad-libbed and clowned the audience into hysterics
Hammy, West Yorkshire, UK

His “Q” series was so original and brilliantly funny in a way that Monty Python was not. I saw him in his one man show (which had other people in it) at the Grand in Leeds. He just ad-libbed and clowned the audience into hysterics. At one point he had all the back curtains raised and the enormously tall and wide stage doors at the back of the stage opened. There we were – in a packed Victorian theatre with several balconies looking out onto a street in Leeds – while startled passers by (on foot, on buses, looked in at us. A surreal memory that will live with me forever. Thanks Spike!

I once appeared on stage with Spike and we made up poems about everything we could think of. Remember one from the time (someone wrote it down!)

Mr Balloon
Played a tune
For Mrs Moon

Mrs Moon
Fell quite soon
Into a swoon

Now Mr Balloon
And Mrs Moon
Marries at noon
(weather permitting).

He made so many millions of people laugh

Spike was better than a hospital full of medical doctors. He made so many millions of people laugh, and therefore happy. I don’t know if he believed in God or not, but with commitment such as his to people’s happiness, I’m sure we will meet again. Rest in peace (and not in pieces!)Spike.
