0540 Belda Talking Komics
0 Comments Published by admin October 5th, 2008 in Especially for ChildrenSample Audio
This rare series had a similar concept to Capitol and RCA read-along albums except rather than the storybook being part of the album, the young listener received a separate comic book to follow as the record played. A total of eight Talking Komics titles were released along with the “Mysto-Magic” record, which would play a different nursery tune every time! Chirpy Cricket features the voice of Daws Butler, whose long list of cartoon characters include Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Wally Gator and Elroy Jetson. Actor Marvin Miller’s (Grumpy Shark) distinguished career included film and voice work, including Aquaman and several other cartoons.

0539 Uncle Don’s Playland

“Uncle Don” Carney was a popular children’s radio host in New York City. For over twenty years and as often as six nights a week, he kept young boys and girls enthralled with his stories and songs. Unfortunately, Uncle Don is probably best remembered for a comment he made after signing off one evening and thinking his microphone was turned off. “There! I guess that’ll hold the little bastards for another night!” Even though there was no tape to prove his guilt and he was never suspended from his show, he spent much of his life trying to disprove the story.

Paul Tripp’s timeless musical tale about a hapless little tuba who wants his own melody but was assigned to limit himself forever to “oompah, oompah.” Scorned as clumsy and overweight by the other instruments, he wanders off to the riverbank and meets a helpful bullfrog who teaches him a melody. He then returns to the rest of the orchestra and delights them with his new tune. Tubby has inspired countless books, toys, records and two animated films, including the 1947 George Pal Puppetoon.

0537 Willie and Hannibal in Mouseland

Another delightful entry from the scarce Mercury Miniature Playhouse series. Jack Carson alternated between comic and dramatic roles throughout his acting career. He starred in his own Jack Benny-style radio series, appeared successfully as a stand-up comedian in Las Vegas and was one of four rotating hosts on the 1950 TV variety series, All-Star Revue. Carson was married four times, once to Lola Albright. He passed away in 1963, shortly after completing his role in the Disney TV comedy Sammy the Way Out Seal.
